All Signs Reveal Us

And sighs are
sunken logs across the
St. Louis river.
And the swinging
bridge begs for mercy:
each step a misery of choice.
Life is too complex a noun,
but we toss it around anyway:
altogether rejoiced,
expending the image
for the sign -life,
like a branch, an apple
or trout's swim, unsatisfied.
